MODERN MUSES

MODERN MUSES: A fresh, modern and seductive group exhibition at Rebecca Molayem Gallery

In their own distinct styles, contemporary female artists

Allois, Lisa Guerrero, Paulette Lust, and Rebecca Molayem

powerfully capture the essence of the modern muse.

Female strength and sensuality is skillfully counterpoised with fragility.

Infused with emotional power and raw feminine energy, the images often enter

the realm of the provocative. Each artist skillfully masters her own technique,

allowing for a diverse selection of mixed media.

A blend of tactile real and abstract invention, the Modern Muse plays an important role

in the complicated representation of the female, as she is at once truthful, beautiful and imagined.

Refreshments will be served

Infinitely impassioned with flame to metal, sculptor Leon Leigh uses no foundry in his process, preferring instead to forge each of his pieces using only the naked flame. Solid steel rods of different diameters are used to create the skeletal form, then molten balls are heated and slowly fused to the naked framework. Rod after rod is then liquefied and remolded, bringing each piece to its unique completion.

Leon’s creations originate from the fire of the imagination of both fantasy and fiction. By reducing the figure to the bare minimum, his sculptures expose the skeleton of a frail body and reveal the playfulness of a vigorous life. is work delivers a conquest of both ruin and charismatic energy.

The creatures of whimsical dreamlike appearance personify the artist’s existence in a world of the sublime and the surreal.

Melanie is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and has won international accolades for her beautiful Renaissance figures. She began her career at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Ca. After graduating she landed a job as a Lead Technical Director for the feature film 'South Park'...Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.' Upon completion of the film she joined the crew of the very popular 'South Park' tv show. During her down time from the series she began street painting for fun and soon found herself painting in places she had only dreamed of. She quickly became one of the most sought after street painters in the world and the only woman to have won the title of 'Maestro' and several Gold Medals in both Italy and Germany. She has worked with clients in Turkey, Holland, Canada, and throughout the U.S.

Now painting full time from her studio, or out on the asphalt, Melanie is gaining momentum in the LA art scene. Melanie works in both Oils and Soft Pastels with such finesse and mastery that her figures dance off the canvas with whimsical charm.

*Rey Alfonso.......In 1998, after years of experimentation and work in aluminum, Cuban artist, Rey Alfonso arrived at the process which he works in today: A unique fusion of old world techniques (inspired by ancient pottery and metallurgy)
modern glass blowing, and contemporary sculpture. Each painting follows a complex sequence of labor intensive steps: the process of creating a piece can take two weeks up to nine months! The process of "Pintura Ardiente."

Rey believes that every painting has a life of its own and that through the rigorous process of heat painting he is able to reveal certain internal truths that provoke in us states of joy, surprise, wonder, and even meditation. For the visually adventurous, these works present an opportunity to collect a truly unique vision in innovation and expression.

Rey's work is available for indoor and outdoor installations.
